Gameweek 3 Team of the week
Formation: 3-4-3
Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker - Liverpool
Even though it was a dominant victory for Liverpool in the end, Alisson was impeccable, making three big saves—denying Joshua Zirkzee twice and Noussair Mazraoui—ensuring there was no way back for Manchester United. It is now 3 clean sheets in 3 games for the Brazilian shot-stopper.
Defender: Nathan Collins - Brentford
Collins performed excellently in Brentford’s 3-1 win over the Saints. He won the most duels in the match with six, consistently stopping any Southampton attack before it could gain momentum. It wasn’t just Collins’ defending that stood out; the Brentford defender was also heavily involved in their third goal. He flicked a header toward goal from a long throw, forcing the keeper to parry it away, right into the path of the arriving Wissa, who sealed the win for the Bees.
Defender: Virgil Van Dijk - Liverpool
Liverpool’s captain was a rock at the back, making life extremely difficult for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee, giving him minimal space to create any chances. Van Dijk was very composed on the ball, serving as the catalyst for several great Liverpool passing moves. He made the most passes in the game (60) with the highest completion rate of 95%. Van Dijk consistently stood up for his teammates throughout the game, whether through his defensive awareness or during heated disputes—it was a true leader's performance.
Defender: Leif Davis - Ipswich Town
Leif Davis was a constant threat down Ipswich’s left-hand side, repeatedly whipping in dangerous balls into Fulham’s box. The Ipswich left-back created the most chances in the game (3), one of which led to Ipswich taking an early lead. After intercepting the ball from a Fulham forward, Davis dribbled past multiple players before delivering a well-measured pass to Delap, who slotted it home. It was a promising performance from the young full-back, helping Ipswich get off the mark for this campaign.
Right Midfielder: Mohamed Salah - Liverpool
Liverpool’s Egyptian king, Mohamed Salah, continues to torment Manchester United, bringing his tally to 15 goals against them after clinically dispatching Liverpool’s third of the game. Szoboszlai shifted the ball to Salah on the edge of the penalty area, and his first-time strike beat the outstretched arm of Onana. Salah was arguably Liverpool’s biggest threat throughout the game, completing the most dribbles (2) and creating the most chances (3). Two of these chances resulted in assists, both delivered as pinpoint crosses to Luis Diaz.
Central Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City
Even though De Bruyne didn’t directly contribute to any of City’s three goals against West Ham with a goal or assist, he expertly dominated the middle of the park, consistently playing line-breaking passes. De Bruyne created the most chances in the team (6) and was unlucky not to score, hitting the woodwork with a superb strike. City’s captain played a pivotal role in helping them maintain their perfect start to the season.
Central Midfielder: Mario Lemina - Wolverhampton Wanderers
Lemina was an absolute workhorse in Wolves’ 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest over the weekend. He made 10 tackles—the most by any player across England’s top four tiers that weekend. It was also the highest tackle count by a Wolves player in a Premier League game since Jonny Castro Otto made 11 in 2019 against Crystal Palace. The Wolves midfielder also grabbed an assist, knocking the ball forward to Bellegarde, who equalized for the Wanderers to earn their first point of the season.
Left Midfielder: Luis Sinisterra - AFC Bournemouth
Sinisterra started on the bench as he watched Everton cruise to a 2-0 lead. Everton thought they had clinched their first win of the season until Sinisterra came on in the 66th minute and became the difference-maker for the Cherries. He assisted Cook's late stoppage-time equalizer by chipping a high cross over to him, which Cook raced onto and scored. However, Sinisterra wasn’t finished; he bagged an even later winner in the 96th minute, heading the ball past Pickford to complete a remarkable turnaround for Bournemouth.
Left Winger: Bryan Mbeumo - Brentford
Mbeumo has truly taken the reins as Brentford’s new star forward since Toney’s departure. Against Southampton, Mbeumo scored a brace in a 3-1 win. His first goal came from a rebounded shot from close range to put the Bees in the lead, and his second saw him capitalize on a Saints mistake to put Brentford out of sight. Mbeumo was also a constant creative threat, creating the most chances in the game with three.
Striker: Erling Haaland - Manchester City
We were wondering how long it would take for Haaland to score his next hat-trick following his one against Ipswich in Game Week 2, and now we have the answer. Just one week later, it was West Ham’s turn to succumb to another Haaland hat-trick, bringing his tally to seven goals in three games—the most by any Premier League player ever in their first three matches. Haaland’s first goal came from latching onto a through ball and slotting it past Areola. For his second, he hammered home a powerful rising shot from 10 yards. To complete his hat-trick, Haaland once again chased down a through ball and coolly flicked it past Fabianski into the back of the net. Records seem to be broken every game by City’s talisman.
Left Winger: Luis Díaz - Liverpool
Luis Díaz delivered an excellent performance in Liverpool’s derby day triumph over Manchester United, scoring a brace in their 3-0 victory. The Colombian winger initially broke the deadlock by nodding home at the far post. He then made it 2-0, starting the move by shrugging Casemiro off the ball and immediately charging at the United defense. After playing a one-two with Salah, Díaz curled a lovely first-time finish past Onana to secure his first-half brace.
